One of the stranger pairings in literary history is surely Somerset Maugham and Dorothy Parker, thrown together in rural South Carolina during the summer of 1942 for what Parker later grumbled had been “three long, long, long weeks.” The two had briefly met in New York the previous year, and Parker had joined the parade of writers, critics, and artists who paid their respects to the great man during his wartime American exile at the southern estate of his publisher, Nelson Doubleday. Instead of the well-lubricated party atmosphere she had expected, Parker found herself consigned to endless games of bridge with Maugham and later complained, “That old lady is a crashing bore.” Parker also didn’t fail to notice that what few visitors there were during her stay were “various handsome young men who were not interested in ladies but who were interested in Mr. Maugham.”

Frank Bottom: Adventures in Procrastination!

I posted this Frank Bottom sketch on my Cara account a year ago. ONE FUCKING YEAR AGO. I’ve been so wrapped up in how fucked up the world is getting, and being unemployed for 18 months, that I just ended up putting this aside for a while and never came back.
It’s been very difficult for me to work on personal stuff since the pandemic peaked and then just… never went away. We’ve seen that public health has been decimated everywhere, a further symptom of letting far-right ideologies creep their way into governments and take over, abolishing science, fuelling racism and transphobia, normalizing the live-streaming of a genocide, and generally just dumbing down the population who just can’t afford to live or eat anymore. How low can we go?
The story of these characters has been unfolding in my mind however, and I really need to get back to doing it. In many ways, what’s been going on is influencing its world-building. I’m thinking of doing it as a simple 8-fold zine comic, and just dropping them around town.
What will this turn into a year from now though? Will I act?

International Law
I’m watching a live-stream from Al Jazeera of thousands of missiles being fired between two nuclear nations, Iran and Israel. This is horrific. Listen to Noura Erakat talk about the hypocrisy of international law.

Abortion Pill on a Business Card
“This Card is an Abortion,” read a handful of business cards distributed by Mixl Laufer, a DIY biohacker, at a hacking conference in Queens Friday. Embedded in the cards are three doses of misoprostol, a medication that safely and effectively induces an abortion when properly used.
